Choosing the right memory card for a GoPro.

Choosing the correct memory card for your GoPro has never been more important in 2024. When the original GoPro's launched, choosing the correct memory card wasn't so much important as write speeds were not too critical for 1080p HD video. This was the standard video recording capability on the original GoPro's. A Class 10 memory card would have sufficied. However as we are now evolving to 4k and 8K video the write speed is crucial for enjoyable playback.

Generally any device that has 4K video capability will require a V30 rated memory card. V30 marked on a flash card is essentially short for "Video 30". This means that the memory card is optimized for Video recording and will offer write speeds, minimum of 30MB/s which is the minimum requirement of 4K video. You can probably chance a Class10 rated card but the chances are the video will be awful and likely break up giving an unpleasant playback watch.

When choosing a memory card for your GoPro Hero5 to GoPro Hero12 then we recommend a card marked with the V30 logo. This will guarantee that your GoPro will record in beautiful, seamless 4K video and you can truly enjoy the playback. If your budget suits you could also look at something that is V60 rated or V90 rated for the ultimate in seamless recording.

Here's what you'll need for the GoPro Hero ranges.

GoPro Hero4, Hero5, Hero6, Hero7, Hero8, Hero9, Hero10, Hero11, Hero12.
- microSDXC card with a minimum V30 rating. You'll see the logo on the card.

Hero4 Session, Hero 5.0MP (CHDHA-301), Hero+LCD, Hero (2018).
- microSDXC card with a simple Class10 rating because the above models are only capable of 1080P/HD video.
